Join the Hiking Event on June 1st as Mt. Komagatake Reopens for Hikers

Now the cherry blossoms front is moving up to the Mt. Akita Komagatake and Nyuto area, we started to see more fresh greens in the residential areas. That means it is the beginning of the Green Season!

Mt. Akita Komagatake spreads over two prefectures, Akita and Iwate, whose highest point is on the Akita side. It is the highest mountain in Akita Prefecture. (Mt. Chokai is higher, but the summit is in the Yamagata prefecture.)

Mt. Akita Komagatake is a popular mountain for hikers from all over Japan. We have been seeing more foreign hikers seeking for a unique experience here. The mountain is known for the various types of wild flowers. There are a number of routes for hikers at all levels, which is why it is very popular for a family group.

Every year, Mt. Akita Komagatake opens for hikers on June 1st. To mark the opening day, the Semboku City and Shizukuishi Town of Iwate Prefecture jointly hold a hiking event, in which a group from each prefecture hikes up from different sides and meet at the summit area (Mt. Odake), mingle, and celebrate the opening of the beautiful mountain. Together they climb down to Akita prefecture side and have a dinner party.
