This year`s Kakunodate Cherry Blossom Festival will be held on April 20~ May 6.
There are opportunities for vendors to sell and customers to buy crafts, foods, books and many other wonderful things. All are welcome to join in the festivities as we celebrate Cherry Blossoms and spring.
Somei yoshino cherry trees were planted along Hinokinai River, which runs through Kakunodate to commemorate the birth of His imperial Majesty in 1934. The cherry trees line both sides of a path along the river and form a beautiful cherry blossom tunnel when at full bloom.
Unfortunately, the buds didn`t seem like they would open for yet another week and we would have to wait till the end of April before they start opening. Around the first week of May looks like it will be a good time to visit since you should be able to see the cherry blossoms around both the samurai district and the riverside park at their peak.

Weeping cherry trees in the samurai district
Kakunodate is well known as the location of one of the Tohoku Region`s most popular cherry blossom spots. The samurai district will be filled with dozens of weeping cherry trees which the former samurai residents of Kakunodate had imported from Kyoto in 1656 to be planted in their gardens. Around 150 weeping cherry trees line the streets these days and lend a rather unique beauty to the samurai district.

Hi everyone! It's such a great news that the cherry blossom festival is finally starting in Semboku City. Also, it's really nice that this blog is continuing on after this April. Please keep it up! I (which you might know who I am by now) will be rooting for you all :)
